Athy is a heritage town in south Kildare, located on the River Barrow. The town at Athy developed from a 12th-century Anglo-Norman settlement to an important stronghold on the local estates of the Fitzgerald earls of Kildare, who owned the town for centuries. The best way to explore and get a true sense of the town - to visit the 16th century White Castle, the 18th century bridge, its beautiful churches - is by ditching the car and deciding to walk. All the gems will be on your way!

With the support of local development organisations and initiatives, Athy has entered a programme of regeneration and is expecting to develop small and medium sized enterprise, improve its infrastructures and maximise its potential as a tourist destination. These goals will promote Athy as a key economic location in the Irish midlands.

Athy's market house is now a museum and a library where art exhibitions can regularly be viewed. There are many exquisite restaurants serving outstanding cuisine and cafes with loveliest coffee, tea and fresh bakery. One of the town's pubs, Frank O'Brien's Bar, is considered a tourist attraction and was voted one of the top ten Irish bars in the Sunday Tribune. Whatever your preference Athy has something for everyone's taste.
